Four generations, quietly carried forward.
Lingkhar Lodge was opened by the Dorji family — a quiet retreat set on the Kanglung–Trashigang highway in eastern Bhutan, looking out across the pine valleys and the Himalayan foothills. We set out to build a house where we would have wished to be met at the door. Years later, we still try to keep that single instinct uppermost.
The Lodge sits in Lingkhar Block, just outside Kanglung, halfway along the road to Trashigang. The rooms look across the valley at sundown; the dining room is open to passing travellers as well as resident guests, and the gardens are a quiet place to sit with a cup of tea.
We are still a family-run house. Anvita Dorji of the Dorji family looks after the lodge today, and lives on-site when she is not travelling.
Small, careful, ongoing.
We compost every kitchen scrap on the garden floor. Our laundry runs on solar-heated water and grey-water recycling. Nine of every ten kilograms of vegetables in the kitchens come from within 80 kilometres of the hotel. We still have work to do, and we try not to lie about it.
A quiet mantlepiece.
